Rules of craps

Craps players place their bets before the first roll of the dice. To do this, they place their tokens on the craps table. The craps table is divided into zones, each of which corresponds to a bet made by a player.

Therefore, in each zone, you will win in some cases and lose in others.

Once the tokens have been placed, the player can roll the dice. To fully understand the situations in which the numbers rolled can be winners or losers, it is important to understand the meaning of the different zones and of the different possible bets.

Zones of the craps table

You bet that the next roll will be an eleven. If this happens, you’ll win 15 times your stake!

You bet that the next roll will be a 7. If this is the case, you win four times your stake.

By placing chips in this zone before the first roll (“Come Out Roll”), a player is betting that the total on the two dice will add up to 7 or 11. If this is the case, he wins even money (the value of the stake). If a total of 2, 3 or 12 is obtained, the player loses his stake. If the total is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, the player rolls the dice again until he obtains this total again (which is called the “point”), or rolls a 7. The player wins even money for rolling the same total but if he rolls a 7 first, he loses his stake.

The player bets that the total on the first roll of the dice will be 2 or 3. If this is the case, he wins even money. If the total is 7 or 11, the player loses his stake. If the total is 12, the stake is returned to the player. If the total is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, the player rolls the dice again until he obtains a 7 or until he rolls this same total (known as the “point”) again. If he rolls a 7 before the “point”, he wins even money. If he obtains the same total again, he loses his stake. However, if he neither wins nor loses on the second roll, the player can decide to withdraw his stake or reduce it.

A player may only place his chips in this zone starting from the second roll. This bet is similar to the “Pass Line Bet”: the player bets that the next roll of the dice will give a 7 or 11. If this is the case, he wins even money. If a total of 2, 3 or 12 is obtained, the player loses his stake. If the total is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, the player rolls the dice again until he obtains the same total (known as the “Come Point”) again, or obtains a total of 7. If he rolls the same total again, he wins even money. If he rolls a 7, he loses his stake.

A similar bet to the “Don’t Pass Line Bet”, but this time it is placed after the first roll. The player bets that the total number on the next roll of the dice will be 2 or 3. If this is the case, he wins even money. If the total is 7 or 11, the player loses his stake. If the total is 12, the stake is returned to the player. If the total is 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10, the player rolls the dice again until he obtains a 7 or the same total (“The Come Point”) again. If he obtains a 7 before the “Come Point”, he wins even money. If he obtains the same total again, he loses his stake.

By placing your chips in this zone, you are betting that the numbers on the dice will add up to 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. If this happens, you win even money except for when the total is 2, for which you win twice your stake, or 12, for which you win 3 times your stake. This bet can be placed before any roll of the dice.

This is an additional wager (called a “Back up” bet), placed on your Pass Line bet, Don't Pass Line bet, Come bet, or Don't Come bet. This bet must be placed after the first roll.

If you bet on Big 6, you win if 6 is rolled before 7. The same principle applies to Big 8. This bet wins even money.

By placing your chips in this zone, you are betting that 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 will be rolled before 7 (Buy zone), or vice-versa (Lay zone).

You’re betting that a “craps” comes up on the next roll of the dice, i.e. a 2, 3 or 12. This bet wins 7 times the stake.

In this zone, you’re betting that 2, 3, 11 and/or 12 will appear on the next roll of the dice. You can bet separately on each number or on any one of the four, of course. The number of times that you win your stake for a successful bet is shown in the boxes. If you’re betting on all four numbers at the same time (a “Horn Bet”) you’ll win ¼ of the amount shown in the box.

You’re betting that the total on the dice will be 4, 6, 8, or 10 with doubles (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, ou 5+5), before you roll a 7.

How to play a game of craps

Before the first roll of the dice, you place your bets on one or more zones of the craps table, including one of the “Pass” or “Don’t pass” zones. At this stage, certain zones are inaccessible (e.g. the “Come” zone). You then roll the dice for the first time. If your “Pass” or “Don’t pass” bet wins or loses, the game stops there and you collect your winnings or lose your stakes.

If your “Pass” or “Don’t pass” bet neither wins nor loses, you have the opportunity to place new bets or new stakes, this time including in the “Come” and “Don’t Come” zones. You then roll the dice again until your initial bet wins or loses. You are allowed to place new bets before each roll.
