A game of baccarat is played between the “Player” and the “Banker” only. The aim of the game is to guess which of the two hands dealt will be closer to the value of nine.
Baccarat is played with six decks of cards which are shuffled after each hand. As in blackjack, the croupier takes the cards from a shoe.
The value of cards between 2 and 9 corresponds to that which is shown on the card (e.g.: a 2 is worth 2 points).
Face cards and 10s have a value of 0.
Aces are worth 1 point.
You decide whether to place your chosen bet on the Banker’s hand, the Player’s hand, or on a Tie (when the total value of the banker’s hand equals the total value of the player’s hand). The croupier then deals two cards to the player and banker, which are added together to obtain the total number of points. Depending on the number of points in each hand, the croupier may then deal a third card to the player, the banker or both. The total number of points in each hand is again added up and the winner is the hand which is closer to 9.
If you bet on the player and his or her hand wins, you win the value of your stake (even money). A winning bet on the bank wins even money minus a 5% commission. If you successfully bet on a tie, you win 8 times your stake!
Depending on the points totals after the first deal, the croupier may sometimes deal a third card to the player and/or the bank. The croupier deals this card face-up firstly to the player and secondly, if necessary, to the bank. If you would like to learn more about the third card distribution rule, click here.
